What is blasting Media?

What is blasting?

Blasting is a finishing process which involves directing a high-pressured stream of abrasive material to a surface. The Aim of this is to remove previous coatings, create a key on the surface for a coating to adhere to or smoothing the surface.

What types are available?

At Ribble Technology, we offer a wide range of blasting media for all your surface preparation needs. Our selection includes various abrasive materials, each with its unique properties and advantages. Here are some of the most commonly used types of blasting media:

  • Garnet: Known for its sharpness and durability, garnet is ideal for removing rust, old paint, and contaminants from metal surfaces. It’s effective in both light and heavy-duty blasting applications.
  • Brown Aluminium Oxide: This abrasive is tough, sharp, and hard, making it suitable for a variety of surface cleaning and preparation tasks. Brown aluminum oxide is great for removing coatings or cleaning metal surfaces before further processing.
  • White Aluminum Oxide: A finer and purer form of aluminum oxide, white aluminum oxide is used for more delicate cleaning jobs. It is ideal for applications that require a smoother finish, such as etching or prepping fine metal surfaces.
  • Glass Beads: Glass beads are a gentler blasting media typically used for cleaning and polishing without causing surface damage. They are perfect for achieving a uniform, smooth finish and are often used in the automotive and aerospace industries.
  • Shot Stainless Steel: Shot stainless steel is a durable abrasive used in shot blasting applications. Its high resistance to wear and corrosion makes it ideal for heavy-duty cleaning and deburring of metal parts.

At Ribble Technology, we stock a range of different gradients from coarse to fine. Remember, the smaller the number, the larger the pieces of the abrasive material, making it more coarse. The larger the number, the finer the abrasive. This gives you flexibility in selecting the right material for your specific needs.

How do I use it?

Choose the Right Media: Select the appropriate abrasive based on the surface material, the desired finish, and the task at hand. For instance, if you need to remove heavy rust, garnet or brown aluminum oxide may be suitable, while glass beads are better for delicate cleaning and polishing.

Set Up the Blasting Equipment: Use an air-powered or wheel-powered blast system to direct the abrasive material toward the surface. Ensure the equipment is calibrated to deliver the right pressure for your specific blasting media.

Blast the Surface: Direct the media at the surface in a controlled manner. Maintain a consistent distance and angle to ensure even coverage and optimal results.

Clean and Finish: After blasting, inspect the surface for any remaining residue. Some applications may require additional cleaning or finishing, such as coating or painting, once the surface is prepared.

Can I re-use it?

The reusability of blasting media largely depends on the material used and the type of application. Generally:

  • Garnet, brown aluminum oxide, and white aluminum oxide are durable and can be reused several times before they lose their abrasive properties. They can be cleaned and collected for reuse.
  • Glass beads and shot stainless steel tend to last longer than other abrasives due to their durability. However, their efficiency may reduce with each use as they become smaller and lose their abrasive properties.

Reusing blasting media can be a cost-effective practice, as long as it is cleaned and sorted properly to maintain its effectiveness. After multiple uses, the media will eventually break down and need to be replaced.

What can It do?

The primary function of blasting media is to clean, etch, or prep surfaces for further treatment. Here’s a look at what blasting media can do:

  • Remove Rust and Corrosion: Effectively strips away rust and corrosion, returning the material to a clean surface.
  • Strip Old Coatings: Easily removes old paint, coatings, or other finishes from metal or stone surfaces, preparing them for a fresh coat.
  • Deburring and Polishing: Removes burrs and rough spots from metal surfaces, and smoothens the surface for polishing or coating.
  • Surface Profiling: Creates a rough or textured surface (“key”) for better adhesion of paints, coatings, or adhesives.
  • Cleaning: Cleans metals, composites, and plastics without damaging the base material.

No matter the job, blasting media is a vital tool in achieving consistent, high-quality finishes across various applications. At Ribble Technology, we’re here to help you choose the best blasting media for your project. Whether you’re preparing a surface for coating, cleaning metal parts, or smoothing rough surfaces, our range of abrasives will help you achieve the perfect finish.
